HONG KONG, Feb. 14—Com munist China today released William McBain, a 78‐year‐old British subject, who was arrest ed in Shanghai last October. He was wheeled across the border into Hong Kong on a baggage trolley and subsequently admit ted to a hospital where his con dition was described as fair.
A Hong Kong Government spokesman said there was still no news about Constance Mar tin, a 72‐year‐old British sub ject, who was arrested at the same time as Mr. McBain. Mrs. Martin was working for the Shanghai branch of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation before her arrest and Mr. McBain is a retired businessman. Both had live dfor many years in China.
The British Government had expressed concern over the de tention of the two elderly Brit ons and requested information about them as well as consular access to them. The Chinese did not accede to the request.
A British Government spokes man said in December that Mr. McBain suffered from a heart condition.
